Replacing Windows Panes: DIY or Not?

Is replacing a window pane a DIY job? It depends on how comfortable you are working with glass. Regardless of your skill level, it’s important to take your time and the proper precautions, like wearing eye protection and gloves. Start with this helpful guide. If you need assistance, call a glass expert.

Common Questions About Replacing a Window Pane

Q. What do I need to get started?

First, get your protective gear. Depending on the type of window, you may need:

  • A putty knife
  • A screwdriver
  • A bucket or can for glass debris
  • A tarp or drop cloth to catch any falling glass

Remove the damaged glass from the window. Remove one shard at time. Make sure kids or pets are not in the area and always wear protective gear when handling glass.

Q. What type of window is it?

There are different techniques for different windows:

  • A single pane window is the easiest to replace. It has putty around the edges to hold the glass in the frame. You can loosen the putty with heat or a putty knife to remove shards that are stuck.
  • Insulated windows are more complicated. There are different types of seals used to keep condensation from forming between the panes. Disengaging the glass from a gasket seal, an adhesive seal or a caulk seal require different methods.

Q. What if I have a broken seal?

It’s the same process. Glazing—replacing the glass instead of the window—is less expensive. We suggest checking the exterior of the window to see if there is any wood rot beneath the frame.

Q. How expensive is it to hire a glass expert?

We’ll come out to your house for a free, in home consultation and give you an estimate. We take the measurements, manage the seal, let you know if there are other issues, and get the window replaced fast. With a busy schedule, sometimes it makes more sense to hire a professional.
