Stained Glass 4th of July Jell-O

Did you know that the stained glass movement in America began with a window for a church in New York in 1843? The designer William Jay Bolton was only in the business for six years before he returned to his homeland in England.  The professional practice of this art form was not put into motion until John La Farge and Louis Comfort Tiffany began to work with the art from of stained glass in the late 19th century.  Believe it or not, the practice of utilizing stained glass as an art form in the United States deteriorated after Bolton’s original creation, and did not resurface until the turn of the 20th century. It was at this time that American architects traveled to Europe to study the art form, and returned to design their own creations of stained glass.

With that piece of history, we can see how far stained glass has come in America.  What better way to celebrate this progress and our nation’s independence with a colorful Jell-O dessert that resembles a stained glass work of art? This red, white, and blue recipe is only easy to make, has a patriotic flare and also tastes delicious.


Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 4  three-ounce boxes of Jell-O in assorted red and blue flavors
  • 14 ounce can sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 envelopes unflavored gelatin
  • Water



Begin by taking one cup of boiling water and dissolving one box of Jell-O in each cup. You should pour into a container that resembles a square about six to eight inches and chill approximately three hours. After the flavors have been chilled cut them into small blocks. Next, mix the blocks in a 9x13 inch pan. In a separate bowl, start to sprinkle two envelopes of unflavored gelatin into ½ cup cold water. Once the gelatin expands in the water, add an additional 1-½ cups boiling water and stir to dissolve. Pour the can of condensed milk, then, pour cooled milk mix over the Jell-O blocks in the 9x13 pan. Chill overnight or until firm.


Cut into shapes and serve our beautiful holiday treat!
